Welcome

The Wickerdale Walkers were organized as a nonpartisan community group with the mission to make a difference for our children and educators. We came together as a group of parents who were upset over the loss of our children’s bus service. During that process, we learned about the challenges that face our school district. We got off the couch and decided to help. We made the plight of our children’s schools and the educators who serve them, our own. Our group has met with key state legislatures to pursue changes and amendments to the current laws that would benefit all of Colorado’s school districts. We are continuing this fight, but we need support from the community in order to carry this out. Please consider joining our cause, whether you realize it or not this fight is your fight. Everyone has a vested interest in providing the best education possible for our next generation.

Will you attend the Wickerdale Walkers march on the Capitol in April?

How do I make a difference?

We have many ways to get involved. One of the easiest is to mail a red crayon, (Crayons 4 Education) to Governor Bill Ritter, sample letter below:

Dear Governor Bill Ritter and Budget Committee members,

You are in receipt of 1 red crayon; courtesy of Crayons 4 Education.

Please take note it is red; this is to symbolize the debt the state is passing onto our children. The cuts to next year’s budget as well as the rescissions this year are stripping Colorado’s children of their ability to compete. Colorado already funds education at $1400 less than the national average, an embarrassment which is now being compounded. The Crayon itself symbolizes Education. We must ensure that this generation is better equipped to meet the challenges of the wider world that they live in. We cannot accomplish this by crippling education year after year. We are demanding a full review of the purposed cuts and alternate methods of funding be devised. Our wish is that you look at the Colorado State Lotto, which currently provides money for Colorado States Parks and also pays farmers on the Western slope to retain their land instead of selling to developers. We appreciate the nice parks but in time of recession and extreme cut backs we are asking you what is necessary the luxury of parks or better education in the lives of our children NOW? If you would like to be better educated about our plan for redirection of the Colorado State Lotto funds please visit the following web site:

The education of children is serious business and we can ill afford to jeopardize their (and our own future) with a culture of cuts and fiscal irresponsibility!

Sincerely,

Be Heard!!!! Douglas County School Board Meeting

On Tuesday January 19th there will be a Douglas County School Board Meeting. This meeting is a far more relaxed forum than traditional school board meetings. Interaction between the board and community is not only encouraged but expected. This is your chance to have your voicxe make a difference. I will be presenting on behalf of the Wickerdale Walkers and would love feedback prior to the 19th for incorporation into my thoughts. Please feel free to give us your thoughts.

  1. On Saturday, 1/9, John Carson, the president of the DCSD school board showed videos called, "Idiots in America", (http://abcnews.go.com/2020/stossel/) to those present at the meeting. After watching the hideousness of what Mr. Carson apparently compares DCSD to... I have to ask, How? How could he compare us to that? Why? Why would he show that at the meeting? Does he honestly believe our schools are in the same realm as those in the video?
As a teacher in DC, I'm not sure I'm in a position to ask, but as concerned parents of DC children, I would think you would want to. I implore you to ask Mr. Carson why and how he feels the way he apparently does.

    Thank you!

  2. Hello Michelle,

I heard about this and do not understand either. We will be happy to ask the question on your behalf. I am happy to as any reasonable question posed by teachers or parents. The goal i have is for all the separate parties to come together and realize that no group in Douglas County is causing this issue. It is the State of Colorado, which treats Douglas Count as a war chest to fund the rest of the state. We have the highest test scores and the lowest funding. As a group we are standing up to say NO @#$%&*@ MORE. We ar e tired of being penalized for doing well. We hope you will come on Tuesday the 19th to hear our message and realized that we are fighting for the children!

    Thanks,

    dd

  3. Here's a good question to ask the board: They think outsourcing is the answer to save costs which would reduce custodial staff; Question: "How in the world do you think it will save us money in the long run, when you have three different people, from an outsourced company, on three different occasions, come out to a classroom to work on an issue when neither of them know anything about the school, how it was built, or the inner workings of the building, and have not communicated with the others, and expect to save the district money when they have to reinvent the wheel every time they come out to fill a work order?"

  4. What specific areas (if any) do you think could be successfully outsourced? Is the primary problem knowledge because the out sourcing is geared to saving money atthe cost of quality and expertise (thus costing more in the long run) or is it a communication issue. What positions are they talking about outsourcing? Sorry I should know more on this one, Brad are you out there? what do you have on this one?
